There’s just something undeniably cool about food trucks.

Maybe it’s the smell of sizzling onions from a van parked under fairy lights. Or the idea of ditching the desk job and serving bao buns by the beach. Whatever it is, the dream of owning a food truck has rolled into the hearts of many Aussies and it’s not hard to see why.

As someone who works with markets and event organizers every day, I’ve seen firsthand the magic that happens when a food truck rocks up, starts cooking, and turns a paddock or carpark into an instant food festival. But I’ve also spoken to dreamers the ones with a killer family recipe or a bold new twist on loaded fries who want to own a truck and hit the road.

If that’s you, I see you. I’ve been on both sides of this world and let me tell you there’s room for your flavor.

🚐 Why We Romanticise the Food Truck Life

There’s freedom in the fantasy:

  • No long leases or fluorescent lights.
  • The open road, serving customers who are genuinely excited to eat your food.
  • The chance to pop up at markets, festivals, weddings or anywhere that hungry people gather.

Food trucks are creative. They’re gutsy. They let you serve what you love, not what a corporate menu board tells you to. And in Australia, from the Byron Bay hinterland to suburban sports grounds, food trucks are part of the experience now not an add-on.

Still dreaming? Here’s a little inspo from the silver screen…

🎬 Top 5 Movies That Made Us Want to Own a Food Truck

  1. Chef (2014)

Starring: Jon Favreau, Sofia Vergara, John Leguizamo

When a frustrated high-end chef quits his restaurant job, he buys a food truck and goes cross-country with his son and best mate, rediscovering the love of food and family. It’s the food truck movie. Watch it with a snack.

  2. The Hundred-Foot Journey (2014)

     Starring: Helen Mirren, Manish Dayal

OK, technically not a food truck but it kicks off with a family’s journey in a rickety van full of spices. It’s a heartfelt tribute to food, culture, and chasing dreams against the odds.

  3. Burnt (2015)

     Starring: Bradley Cooper, Sienna Miller

A Michelin-starred chef rebuilding his life. There’s a brief nod to food trucks in this gritty redemption story, and it captures that “starting from scratch” passion perfectly.

  4. The Great Food Truck Race (TV Series)

     Host: Tyler Florence

A reality competition where teams travel across the US running food trucks. It’s messy, dramatic, delicious and addictive to watch.

Street Food (Netflix Docuseries)

While not fictional, this series shares the real stories behind street food vendors (many from humble trucks or carts) across the world. Inspiring, raw, and oh-so-flavorsome.

🇦🇺 Food Trucks in Australia: It’s More Than a Trend

From Brissy to Bunbury, the Aussie food truck scene is thriving. You’ll find everything from smoked brisket vans to vegan doughnut carts, Indonesian satay trailers, fresh pasta from a kombi, and more.

Local councils are getting on board too, with food truck-friendly zones, twilight markets, and mobile trading licenses making it more accessible than ever to hit the road legally and confidently.

Owning a food truck is still hard work there’s prep, permits, power, and packing up in the rain. But the community, creativity, and lifestyle? Absolutely worth it.
